Fuck banks.

Mine is literally trying to trap me right now.

Last night I made to two separate purchases; both for $5.99. Checked my account right after, saw that they were both posted, deducted from my available balance, leaving me with $11.99.

So now, I check my account again (I check constantly now after gaining over $250 in over-draft fees) and it tells me I have $17.98. I think to myself, "Oh, what's all this then?" (I really did). Check my transactions, and one of those $5.99 purchases has mysteriously gone missing.

So in other words, my bank is trying to get me to think I have more money, so I in turn spend it, thus overdrawing my account and charging me.

Fucking banks, man.

Dissidia Final Fantasy = Biggest disappointment of the year.

But not for the gameplay or anything like that. No, it's just this: It was released on the PSP.

WHY? Fans have been waiting for years for a game like this, and they put it on the PSP, which is technically inferior to...well, every other game system post-2001. Who was the brain pan behind this decision?

Plain and Simple Pt. 1: Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII looks awesome.

Well, it had better after how long they've been working on it for. North American audiences won't be seeing from this title till some undetermined time in 2010 (thank you very much, Microsoft), but all that is doing is building up the suspense. From the trailers I've seen, this looks like it could be on par with the greatest titles the series had to offer...of which I won't name here for fear of starting a fandom debate/flame war. The story (what little is known about it) seems just as riveting as Final Fantasy can get, and the characters are the most diverse and lifelike since part VI. In fact, I'm very glad to see that the majority of the cast doesn't look like J-rock stars or dolled up teen idols, they actually look like roughed up soldiers, people who look like something their setting would produce; someone who's taken their fair share of abuse and oppression. I mean, that seems to be the recurring theme in Final Fantasy: government oppression, and some rebel force out to set things right. It's pretty hard to weed out the ones that aren't about some teenage cast of freedom-fighters out to take down some evil empire or corporation, but, as least as far as Final Fantasy goes, this one has the most believe cast to support the idea. Granted, earlier titles couldn't graphically represent the look of their characters very well, but even so it was very hard to accept them as people who struggled through a brutal regime and decided to fight the good fight.

Um...what is the point of all this. I'm not usually one to flaunt around my opinions about things. Especially when it comes to something like Final Fantasy, cause the fans of their respective titles will just about defend them to the death. Nothing wrong with that, but it does kind of irk me when that fandom sometimes makes it hard for others to enjoy their favorites. Like for me personally, probably my favorite in the series is Final Fantasy VIII, which is incidentally a lot of other peoples' most hated. Honestly, I couldn't give less a damn about that, but it does get under my skin after a while of going to forums and the like only to hear constant bashing a picking apart of one my favorite games. Made worse by the fact that everyone seems to favor part VII more, a game I feel is in some ways inferior...but I won't get into that right now.

What was I on about?

So, what would you say is the last good Final Fantasy game? Some would say the greats ended with part VI, and rightly so. VI was a great game for its time, and seems to have aged particularly well, even being remade for the Game Boy Advance (crossing my fingers for a Wii Virtual Console release as well). Others would be more inclined to pick amongst the Playstation titles, which is a much more broad selection. Some say VII was the last, others (but rarely) say, VIII, IX, and finally X. I hear XI did pretty well, but I'm not going to count to that one right now as it doesn't really fit into the main series as well. And XII? I loved it, but it doesn't seem to have the fan following as some of the earlier ones, from what I've seen. A lot of people like to nitpick about that one. True, they do it to just about every game (I think), but some more than others. Many say that Vaan was a lame main character, even though he technically wasn't the main guy (at least, that's what I thought). For the sake of argument (and a much longer article), I'll just say that the last good title was X; not really my opinion, but it did seem to be more well received than its successors. This brings me back to the heart of my argument: Part XIII looks awesome. What I mean by that is that this looks like the phoenix down that could revive peoples' faith in Square Enix. It could be just me, but it seems that the series has slumped a little bit since they became Square Enix. Their first game was X-2 (way to kickoff your partnership), and since then if we weren't getting a sequel to VII, we were getting something that didn't really feel like a Final Fantasy title. Like I said, I love XII, but did it really seem like it should've been XII? Or XI for that matter. Both I feel maybe should've been spin-offs, but at least XII kept somewhat to the feel of the series as a whole, so that one can pass. Now with the announcement of XIV, also an online title, I just wonder what is going on at Square Enix. That's why I think I'm going to enjoy XIII so much. Versus XIII and (maybe) Agito XIII as well. Because they look like Final Fantasy games. Back to the tried and true formula of the series, but evolving it, expanding it so it becomes something bigger than anything before it, but you can still tell it's Final Fantasy.

Plain and simply, I think Final Fantasy XIII is gonna be the saving grace of Square Enix.

The Brothers Bloom

I'm not one for writing big, long-winded reviews, so I'll just say what I thought of the film. I just got through seeing for the first time not an hour or two ago, so I may still need to let it sink in for a bit. But anyway...

First off, I've never heard of the director, Rian Johnson. I looked him up, and he's only done one other film so far, which I've never even heard of. That doesn't really matter, I'd never skip out on a film that looked interesting because I'm unfamiliar with the director, but I point this out because I didn't really know what to expect from it, which is good. A lot of people (and by a lot I mean only two or three) have been saying that he's trying to be too much like Wes Anderson, which I didn't really see. The style was very unique, very stylish. This is also one of the first films I have seen were the clothing has really caught my eye.

So, now down to the story, characters, etc. Johnson said himself that he was trying to create a "character-based con man movie with an emotional payoff", and in that respect, I think he succeeded. Rather than have a duo that pulls cons for the hell of it, just because they can, the film does a better job of explaining why they fell into that world. I won't give anything away here, but the character element is really well done here, and it definitely comes as a more mature con man film. The characters were very convincing. I never for a second thought they were "written", none of the dialogue seemed forced or contrived, it all felt natural. Well, as natural as dialogue can sound from professional tricksters. Speaking of dialogue, I was very impressed with the character of Bang Bang (played by Rinko Kikuchi). She was a quirky character, sort of the comic relief, but rather than shoving her in your face, she is very subtle, as well as enigmatic. But Rachel Weisz's character is probably the heart of a lot of the film. She does a very good job of portraying an awkward shut-in, and her need for excitement and adventure adds a very lighthearted side to the film.

The movie has been somewhat marketed as a comedy, and trailers have really only shown the funny bits (though not all of them), but this is definitely a thinker film, I think. Very little is outwardly explained, leaving you to have to guess or piece together a lot of what really happened. The ending (again, not giving anything away), was something to ponder. It didn't wrap up like most films like this do, but it was still satisfying. Actually, right now I'm still trying to figure everything out, and for me, that's what makes a movie really good. Ones you have to think about, watch a few times to really understand. Everything is there, you just have to really pay attention to know what's going on. It's a film that you can discuss and debate, that that's always a good thing for me.

Um...if I had to rate it, I would give it 9/10 (which is good). Probably one of my favorite films so far this year.

I have a simple question:

Why is it okay for a character like James Bond to kill people, drink like a fish, and womanize...but not to smoke, like he used to?

I swear, liberals live up their own ass.

Anyway, here's this:

<lj-embed id="56" />

Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the keyboard.

More things:

Dragonball: Evolution - It was awesome, dammit. No, it wasn't "so bad, it was awesome", it was just friggin' awesome. Anyone who says it was ridiculous or not true to the comic/show are taking the comic/show way too seriously, which is just silly.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Okay, apparently I'm the complete opposite of X-Men fans on this one. I never really got into the comic, my only real experience with the series was the popular cartoon show of the early 90s. Whether or not that was true to the comic books, I have no idea, but I liked it. I remember liking the first X-Men film when it came out in 2000, and then the one after that. Then the third one came out, and I just completely forgot about the first two altogether. I soon found out that I was a lone wolf in liking this film, but honestly, I liked it way better than the others. In fact, I don't even own the first two, just part 3. Now with Origins, I again seem to be the lone wolf, because I really think that it was better than all three of the previous X-Films (lulz). A lot of people complained about the special effects, which is kind of stupid. I didn't really pay attention to them. I was too busy focusing on that story thing they put in the movie. As for the differences with the comic book, as a casual X-Men fan, I didn't mind. I can see why people would be so upset, but they need to realize that (at least this is what I think, I could be wrong) they're trying to create a separate continuity with the films, something different from the comic books. I think it's better this way, because it keeps you on your toes, you don't know what to expect. Not too mention, it seems that the Origins film at least, (maybe the first three, I don't really know) they just combined several different story threads from the comics into one, which totally worked for me. Also, the conflict between Wolverine and Sabretooth really won me over. The friend/enemy relationship always does.

24, Season 7 - Only three more episodes to go, and I'm psyched to see how it ends.

Also, I was watching the Star Wars movies a little bit ago (the original trilogy only, please), and it got me thinking about filmmaking and stuff. It's kind of funny to think that when these films were made in the late 70s and early 80s, they were under budget, and therefore had to be really creative with their visuals. Most of it was blue-screens, puppets, animatronics, whatever, but somehow was very lively and convincing. But later when they made the prequel trilogy, they had a much bigger budget, and better technology to work with, and with all that, they managed to produce something that was very synthetic, and clashed with the heart of the original trilogy. I think that the effort definitely shows with the original films, whereas the newer ones (as well as the changes made to the originals) just seems very lazy and uninspired. It's kind of ironic that, for me anyway, George Lucas has provided me with both a do and don't for filmmaking.

Now let's go down to the cellar and carve ourselves a witch!
